1 - Minor scratches, hard to see even at arms length
2 - Minor scratches, viewable within a few feet
3 - The grey area, if you're at all picky, look for a 1 or 2 rating
4 - Major scratches/scuffs, could be rechromed
5 - Cosmetically needs to be refinished, great for powdercoating
